FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Portsmouth

Your support is needed to help the City of Portsmouth renovate Spartan Municipal Stadium and Branch Rickey Park !

As steward of these recreational areas, the City has upgraded the lighting and worked with local Little Leagues to move ball fields to this recreational area. A sponsor also assisted in scoreboard upgrades creating an all-purpose recreational area and increased the Little Leagues’ abilities to host events. Several years ago, the City limited field use at Spartan Stadium to insure the best turf possible for both Portsmouth and Notre Dame High School football teams who currently use the stadium.

To help keep the history of Portsmouth alive, the City believes it is important to work with citizens and recreation enthusiasts. Mayor James Kalb and City Service Director Chris Murphy met with citizens to determine suitable uses such as concerts and tournaments and what upgrades/renovations are needed for this recreation area.

Proposed upgrades include:

Installation of artificial turf and Replacement of the track at Spartan Stadium

Upgrade the electric, plumbing, restroom, locker and shower rooms as needed at Spartan Stadium and Branch Rickey Park

Such upgrades will increase the recreation area’s ability to meet the current and future needs of Portsmouth and our community while enabling the recreation area to generate more revenues. With these upgrades, Spartan Stadium and Branch Rickey will be available to host track meets, soccer tournaments, softball tournaments and concerts in addition to having a premium field for local high school football.

Approximately $3.6 million dollars is needed to complete the project. The City of Portsmouth has been working diligently to secure funding for the project from various sources and needs your assistance.

We need YOU to tell your representatives in Congress the importance of this project ! Sign a support letter TODAY! Letters of support are available at the Mayor’s Office at 728 Second Street, Portsmouth, Ohio.
You can also print the letters from the Portsmouth Spartans Historical Society webpage at www.portsmouthspartans.org. You can mail letters to:

Chris Murphy, Service Director
728 Second Street
Portsmouth, Ohio 45662

Letters are available now through May 4th. For more information, please contact Chris Murphy at 740-354-7766.
